Post 1. Reflection: Choosing Your Team and Project

Chosen contribution team

Polyglots.

Reasons for choosing this team

I chose the Polyglots team because I was drawn to the fact that their work enables WordPress to reach people all over the world in their own language. It strikes me as a very tangible way to contribute to the community without needing to write code. Furthermore, it aligns with my interests and my command of the Spanish language; I want to leverage this knowledge so that more people in Costa Rica can use WordPress with terminology that feels natural and easy for them to understand.

Contribution project

My project involves translating the Gutenberg plugin into Costa Rican Spanish (es_CR). I plan to translate 300 text strings from the “Stable” (latest version) sub-project and submit them via translate.wordpress.org. The translation is currently 50% complete, and through my contribution, I aim to help bring it closer to the 90% threshold required to generate the initial language pack.

Relevance to your skills and interests

My proficiency in Spanish, combined with my attention to detail, enables me to produce clear and accurate translations. I also have experience using WordPress, which helps me understand the context of interface text and select the most appropriate translations. I have a keen interest in technology, languages, and free/open-source software, this project brings all three together.

What I hope to learn

I hope to learn how to use the translate.wordpress.org platform and its associated workflow, including the use of locale-specific glossaries and style guides. I also want to gain insight into the translation review and approval process, learn how to collaborate with other community members, and understand how work is organized within an open-source project.

What I hope to achieve

By the end of the program, I aim to have completed and submitted the 300 text strings, making a meaningful contribution to the translation of Gutenberg into Costa Rican Spanish. Additionally, I hope to gain the confidence to continue collaborating with the Polyglots team and the broader WordPress community after the program concludes.
